    Is plaquenil immunosuppressive

It's used to treat and prevent malaria infection, and to reduce symptoms and progression of autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and others. Malaria is spread by mosquitoes, which transmit the parasites that cause the infection, usually in tropical and subtropical parts of the world.

Find patient medical information for Plaquenil Oral on WebMD including its uses, side effects and safety, interactions, pictures, warnings and user ratings. Immunosuppressive drugs, including cyclophosphamide and azathioprine, and adrenal hormones, such as prednisone PDS, are clinical drugs used in the treatment of LN 2,3. However, these drugs present significant side effects with long-term and high-dose application. With Plaquenil, however, the most commonly prescribed anti-malarial, this sort of damage occurs only in 1 out of 5,000 people who take the drug for five years or more. For this reason though, it is important that you see an ophthalmologist for an exam before starting to take an anti-malarial medication for your lupus.

For example, it may be combined with an antibiotic to treat chronic Q-fever, which humans usually catch from farm animals or raw milk. Plaquenil is used to treat other types of infections too.

  3. From a technical point of view plaquenil is an immunosuppressant, however, from a medical point of view it is definitely NOT considered as one as its action is so light as to be insignificant in that respect. Any experienced lupus doctor would never describe plaquenil as an immunosuppressant.

The answer was that while Hydroxychloroquine, the generic name for Plaquenil and the tablet I take in the same dose as yourself i.e. 200mg a day at the moment, is a disease modifying drug and an anti-malarial, it is also a mild immunosuppressant too. So this could be why your immune system is so low at the moment. Plaquenil is prescribed as a disease-modifier, in other words, to decrease pain, decrease swelling, and prevent joint damage and disability. It is not known how Plaquenil works but researchers believe that Plaquenil interferes with communication between cells within the immune system. Ultimately, it is thought to block proinflammatory. Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil ®, a medication often taken by Sjögren’s patients, is not generally considered an “immunosuppressant.” While it does change or “modulate” the immune system in various ways, it does not lead to an increased risk of infections and does not require lab monitoring.

Plaquenil headache. Lupus Forums at The Lupus Site I got prescribed Plaquenil last week and, since the first dose, have got horrible headaches. I stopped taking it and the headache stopped. Has anyone else had headaches with it? I know it's a listed side-effect, but I don't know whether to keep taking it in the hope that the headache goes after a couple of weeks.
