Finasteride prevents the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body. DHT is involved in the development of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Finasteride is used to treat male pattern hair loss in men. It is also used to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate. Finasteride may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide. This medicine should never be taken by a woman or a child. Finasteride can be absorbed through the skin, and women or children should not be permitted to handle finasteride tablets. Using finasteride may increase your risk of developing prostate cancer. Finasteride 1 mg (generic for Propecia) is a medication approved by the FDA to treat male pattern hair loss, also known as androgenic alopecia. Finasteride is also used in a 5 mg dose (generic for Proscar) to treat symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), or an enlarged prostate. Finasteride works on both the prostate and scalp because it is in those two areas (and a few others) that finasteride blocks the the enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT. It does not affect a very similar enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT in other areas of the body. This makes it selective and less likely to cause unwanted side effects. Notice, we said less likely; every drug can cause side effects and it is important to understand that when looking into any treatment plan. Finasteride is one of two FDA approved treatments to manage male pattern hair loss. Finasteride (Proscar) is used alone or in combination with another medication (doxazosin [Cardura]) to treat benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH, enlargement of the prostate gland). Finasteride is used to treat symptoms of BPH such as frequent and difficult urination and may reduce the chance of acute urinary retention (sudden inability to urinate). It also may decrease the chance that prostate surgery will be needed. Finasteride (Propecia) is also used to treat male pattern hair loss (gradual thinning of the hair on the scalp, leading to a receding hairline or balding on the top of the head in men.) Finasteride (Propecia) has not been shown to treat thinning hair at the temples and is not used to treat hair loss in women or children. Finasteride is in a class of medications called 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. Finasteride treats BPH by blocking the body's production of a male hormone that causes the prostate to enlarge. Finasteride treats male pattern hair loss by blocking the body's production of a male hormone in the scalp that stops hair growth. It is usually taken once a day with or without food.

I was curious to know why i didnt have normal menstrual cycles i could go for a year without having one. I have been trying to conceive for the past maybe 3yrs with no success. When i was 16 my doctor precribed provera so i can have a period and i bleed extremly heavy for a week.. then after that he placed me on birth control so i can at least regualte and have my period every month. I took birth control from age 16-24 and decided to stop because i was scared it might affect the possibility to have kids (but still no period on its my own). So at age 26 i decided to ttc and had no luck my GYN placed me on provera and clomid 50mg and after 3 tries no success. i believe it didnt work the last two times because i didnt have a period when i was taking the two last cycles of clomid. At age 27 i decided to google my conditions and came upon PCOS and started reseraching and i was positive that i had PCOS. Any PCOS women have success on Metformin and Clomid.
