    Stopping plaquenil before pregnancy

So far I have no more energy than when I first started and has developed neuropathy which I have just found out from Web MD that this neuropathy is one of the side effects of this med! Saying that by stopping this it would take another 6 months to build up the benefit. There are other meds that can help with what you are experiencing, and if your doctor didn't address that then I would seek out a second opinion... Please don't stop your plaquenil until you are sure it is the right thing to do and in your best interest.

Hydroxychloroquine is frequently used in RA as part of triple therapy in conjunction with methotrexate and sulfasalazine Singh et al. 2012. Much of the data regarding the safety of hydroxychloroquine in pregnancy comes from its use for malaria and connective tissue diseases, particularly systemic lupus erythematosus SLE.

Plaquenil is a 6-weeker as far as the benefits are concerned, but it would be more dangerous to stop if you spend a lot of time outside and if this were the summer. Or maybe another doctor if you're not comfortable w/your current one.

Nov 12, 2009 Plaquenil is a 6-weeker as far as the benefits are concerned, but it would be more dangerous to stop if you spend a lot of time outside and if this were the summer. If you're gonna experiment, I went off it cold turkey as it didn't hurt to do it that way, but you better get back on before the summer or you could experience a flare-up. No fetal abnormalities are known to have occurred from taking hydroxychloroquine, and physicians at several major universities have used anti-malarial drugs for years to treat pregnant women with lupus without negative side effects on the fetus. Discontinued Plaquenil.other options? The alternative to Plaquenil is a slightly different anti malarial called Quinacrine. Plaquenil replaced Quinacrine formerly called Atabrine for anti malarial prophylaxis so now the Quinacrine has to be made up into pills or gel capsules by a compounding pharmacy. If you google you will find details of compounding pharmacies.
