Sildenafil is a medicine used to treat erectile dysfunction. It increases blood flow to the penis to help men get an erection. At least two-thirds of men have improved erections after taking it. Sildenafil is also sometimes used to treat pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure in the blood vessels that supply the lungs). This medicine is available on prescription and can also be bought from most pharmacies. It comes as tablets that you swallow, chewable tablets, and as a liquid that you drink. Sildenafil for erectile dysfunction (Viagra) can be taken by men aged 18 and over. Sildenafil for pulmonary hypertension (Revatio) can be taken by adults and children aged 1 and over. Do not take sildenafil if you: You can get sildenafil on the NHS if you have erectile dysfunction or pulmonary hypertension. Sildenafil relaxes muscles of the blood vessels and increases blood flow to particular areas of the body. Sildenafil under the name Viagra is used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence) in men. Another brand of sildenafil is Revatio, which is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension and improve exercise capacity in men and women. Do not take sildenafil if you are also using a nitrate drug for chest pain or heart problems, including nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate, isosorbide mononitrate, and some recreational drugs such as "poppers". Taking sildenafil with a nitrate medicine can cause a sudden and serious decrease in blood pressure. Some medicines can cause unwanted or dangerous effects when used with sildenafil. Tell your doctor about all your current medicines, especially riociguat (Adempas). Contact your doctor or seek emergency medical attention if your erection is painful or lasts longer than 4 hours. A prolonged erection (priapism) can damage the penis.
Treatment of men with erectile dysfunction, which is the inability to achieve or maintain a penile erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual performance. In order for Sildenafil tablets to be effective, sexual stimulation is required. Posology Use in adults: The recommended dose is 50 mg taken as needed approximately one hour before sexual activity. Based on efficacy and toleration, the dose may be increased to 100 mg or decreased to 25 mg. The maximum recommended dosing frequency is once per day. If Sildenafil tablets is taken with food, the onset of activity may be delayed compared to the fasted state (see section 5.2). Use in the elderly: Dosage adjustments are not required in elderly patients (≥ 65 years old). Use in patients with impaired renal function: The dosing recommendations described in 'Use in adults' apply to patients with mild to moderate renal impairment (creatinine clearance = 30 - 80 ml/min). The recommended dose is 50 mg taken as needed approximately one hour before sexual activity. Based on efficacy and tolerability, the dose may be increased to 100 mg or decreased to 25 mg. The maximum recommended dosing frequency is once per day. If Sildenafil is taken with food, the onset of activity may be delayed compared to the fasted state (see section 5.2). Since sildenafil clearance is reduced in patients with hepatic impairment (e.g. Based on efficacy and tolerability, the dose may be increased step-wise to 50 mg up to 100 mg as necessary. With the exception of ritonavir for which co-administration with sildenafil is not advised (see section 4.4) a starting dose of 25 mg should be considered in patients receiving concomitant treatment with CYP3A4 inhibitors (see section 4.5). In order to minimise the potential of developing postural hypotension in patients receiving alpha-blocker treatment, patients should be stabilised on alpha-blocker therapy prior to initiating sildenafil treatment. In addition, initiation of sildenafil at a dose of 25 mg should be considered (see sections 4.4 and 4.5).
