Clonidine belongs to a class of drugs called central alpha-adrenergic agonists. In the United States, clonidine tablets are sold under the brand name Catapres and clonidine skin patches are sold under the brand name Catapres-TTS. There is also an injectable form that is administered directly into the spinal cord for the treatment of postoperative pain. Clonidine tablets and patches are approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of high blood pressure. However, clonidine has been found to be useful in the treatment of alcohol, opiate, and nicotine withdrawal syndromes, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and Tourette's syndrome, one of the tic disorders . Clonidine was synthesized in 1960s and was initially tested as a nasal decongestant. In the United States, clonidine was first used to treat hypertension although it has also been investigated for treatment of different neuropsychiatric disorders. Clonidine was effective in reducing sleep initiation latency and night awakening, to a less degree in improving attention deficits hyperactivity, mood instability and aggressiveness in this cohort of 19 children with ASD. Further evaluation with placebo-controlled double-blind clinical trial of clonidine use in ASD will provide more insight into the clinical efficacy and safety of the medicine in ASD.

Some or all previous antihypertensive treatment may have to be continued, particularly in patients with more severe forms of hypertension. Under-educated parents are poor advocates for their children....being angry and putting the doctor "in his place" won't help the child. or, is there a history of anectodal evidence to support this prescription? If, after asking those questions or doing the research after getting home, one finds the answers cannot support the prescription, then begin to question the doctor's choice..do it civilly because the autism community; while large nationwide, is often small in our own towns and we often have to see these physicians again - over time, they can become a trusted ally. Ok for one clonadine is not just used for hypertention anymore. My stepson has Sensory integration disorder (mild autism). His behaviral issues and everything in his life does a 360 degree change for the positive when he is this medication. However he is starting to have to take more of it and eventually he wont be able to take it because you can only take so much.
