I am into my 2nd year of menopause and going on 53yrs old. Targa, how were your mood swings before discontinuing Zoloft during peri-menopause and early menopause? I decided this past May (3mons ago) to discontinue Zoloft (approx 15yrs of use) and start on Bio-Identical Hormones. Lots of emotions to include severe worry, and crying! @colleenyoung and @dawn_giacabazi have made excellent points that this is the type of conversation to have with your doctor to determine what the options are and ultimately discuss what might be right for you since it’s highly personal decision. My doctor tells me that I need to give the hormones approx. This is scary and I’m beginning to wonder if I should go back on Zoloft. In addition to involving your doctor, if you are seeing other clinicians, such as a psychiatrist or therapist, mention your symptoms to them. @callalily74 and @dawn_giacabazi, do you have any thoughts for Targa? This may be a question that only you and your doctor can decide together as your questions are very specific to you. Hopefully theya re aware of what medications you are on. However bringing them into the conversation could provide additional support in terms of getting another opinion on medications as well as discussing the emotional side of coping with everything. It is recommended that the usage of Zoloft is gradually decreased. The withdrawal symptoms usually last for 1-2 weeks but in some cases they decrease over a period of one month. What happens is that Zoloft has a half life for about one day. That means that every day that passes without you taking Zoloft, the level in the blood falls about 50%. When I had psych med issues that caused gynecological issues, especially with the hormones, my pcp, psychiatrist and my consulting gynecologist tackled it together and hashed out a treatment plan and suggestions for me. It wasn't done with menopause, because as I said, it was pretty tame, and my psychiatrist did have experience and knowledge in treating psychiatric concerns with his female patients going through menopause. We know she was diagnosed with depression and found Xanax and Zoloft prescribed for her menopausal symptoms. dr just gave me an RX for zoloft but i havent filled it yet....for 50mg but he said just take half of a pill so it would be 25mg the past few days i have had good days but today blows......scared to be on meds but i dont want to feel like this anymore anyone take zoloft? She has stopped eating/drinking; has lost approx 75 lbs in the last 3 mos.

I was just curious if anyone else had tried the Zoloft for menopause and their results. Has anyone here been prescribed Zoloft for menopause? Please don't let this turn into a thread about natural cures vs. I thought it was odd also but my doctor tells me that this is being prescribed more and more for menopause symptoms and less HRT is being prescribed. I had a hysterectomy years ago and started menopause several months ago. Like I said the results have been good as far as it controlling the hot flashes I just wondered about others and if they had good or bad results or if they had tried it at all. I don't really have hot flashes now but do occasionally get sweats. I've read a lot lately about antidepressants being prescribed for menopausal women in lieu of HRT.
