Cytotec (misoprostol) is a medication used to manage a miscarriage when h CG results or ultrasound tests confirm the diagnosis of either a missed miscarriage or blighted ovum. Your doctor may give you this alternative to a dilation and curettage procedure (D&C) or a potentially long wait for a miscarriage to begin naturally. Misoprostol is labeled as an ulcer medication but has been found to be helpful in miscarriage management. Its use for management of missed or incomplete miscarriages is considered to be "off-label" by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), but it has been well-studied and is widely recommended. Off-label use is legal and not considered experimental when it is backed by scientific evidence. Misoprostol is sometimes used in combination with mifepristone, an antiprogesterone drug that is also known as Mifeprex or RU486. Another possibility is gemeprost, but this drug may trigger more severe side effects in some cases. I want to share my experience because I hope someone else can find it useful. I bled heavily and passed tissue/small clots I think but nothing that sounds like what others have. I found out I was pregnant at 7 weeks and everything seemed fine until a bit of bleeding on Tuesday, the morning of my 12 week scan where they confirmed no fetal pole just a sac. I am 39 in October and now worried I'll continue to miscarry after 2. my doctor has suggested d&c or misporostol for removal of sac but am too confused and afraid to do anything . I took misoprostol with water and swallowed and the pain/bleeding started couple hours later. Unfortunately I’ve had 3 missed miscarriages and one ectopic. I was also only given one dose but my doctor said I could get another one if needed. I really hope you health has improved since you last posted. I had my ultrasound twice within 8 weeks of pregnancy and was declared that my baby is not growing but my body is still processing for pregnancy i.e sac is formed and waiting for my baby . I am in the UK, had a natural miscarriage at 4-6weeks 2 years ago and a delayed miscarriage this week at 12 weeks. Took cytotec- expecting the worst but your story really helps me understand what to expect. 8 weeks no heartbeat - diagnosis missed miscarriage. Hi- I am new to this site and first of all want to say sorry for everyone' s experiences. Sorry that you all have had to experience the same thing. I am on my 3rd miscarriage and trying to avoid a D&C this time. 7 weeks slow increasing hcg levels compared to week 6 but normal heartbeat. Thank you so much for your detailed story it really helps me. The only reason why I am considering it is because it is inevitable, and I don't think I can wait weeks for something to happen on its own. I only joined this website to tell you that I really hope you are ok. I took my pills this evening and waiting for it to happen. Three options, like you said and the misoprostol is beside me on the nightstand. Missed miscarriage at 8 weeks and half, waited for weeks to pass it naturally but never worked.
NATHAN HITZEMAN, MD, and KELLY ALBIN, MD, Sutter Health Family Medicine Residency Program, Sacramento, California Am Fam Physician. This clinical content conforms to AAFP criteria for continuing medical education (CME). Misoprostol, administered by various routes, is as effective as expectant management and nearly as effective as uterine aspiration. All three options have high success rates for completing miscarriage. Women treated with misoprostol had higher rates of nausea, prolonged bleeding, and unplanned surgery, but roughly 95% (1,280 out of 1,355) were able to avoid having an invasive surgical procedure. (Strength of Recommendation: B, based on inconsistent or limited-quality patient-oriented evidence.)Miscarriage occurs in up to 15% of pregnancies, and it commonly presents as bleeding during the first trimester.1 Threatened miscarriage refers to vaginal bleeding with a closed cervical os. About one-half of affected women eventually miscarry, although the risk is much lower if a fetal heartbeat has been detected.2 The term inevitable miscarriage refers to the leakage of amniotic fluid with an open cervical os. Miscarriage is incomplete if the placenta and fetus have not been fully expelled. This Cochrane review focuses on women who have symptomatic incomplete miscarriage. Oceanside is the third-largest city in San Diego County, California. Together with Carlsbad and Vista, it forms a tri-city area. The city is located just south of Camp Pendleton, the busiest military base in the United States. Oceanside has experienced dramatic growth since 1970, when its population was 45,000. Much of the city's area was developed into single-family home tracts during the 1970s and 1980s. Since the 1990s, increased commercial and industrial development have diversified Oceanside's economic base. Although the area was first settled by Native Americans, the first European explorers arrived in 1769. The Spanish missionaries under Father Junipero Serra founded Mission San Luis Rey de Francia on a former site of a Luiseño Indian village on the banks of the San Luis Rey River. WARNING: Serious and sometimes fatal infections OR bleeding Serious and sometimes fatal infections and bleeding occur very rarely following spontaneous, surgical, and medical abortions, including following MIFEPREX use. No causal relationship between the use of MIFEPREX and misoprostol and these events has been established. Patients with serious bacterial infections (e.g., ) and sepsis can present without fever, bacteremia, or significant findings on pelvic examination following an abortion. Very rarely, deaths have been reported in patients who presented without fever, with or without abdominal pain, but with leukocytosis with a marked left shift, tachycardia, hemoconcentration, and general malaise. A high index of suspicion is needed to rule out serious infection and sepsis . Prolonged heavy bleeding may be a sign of incomplete abortion or other complications and prompt medical or surgical intervention may be needed. Advise patients to seek immediate medical attention if they experience prolonged heavy vaginal bleeding Because of the risks of serious complications described above, MIFEPREX is available only through a restricted program under a Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) called the MIFEPREX REMS Program Before prescribing MIFEPREX, inform the patient about the risk of these serious events. Ensure that the patient knows whom to call and what to do, including going to an Emergency Room if none of the provided contacts are reachable, if she experiences sustained fever, severe abdominal pain, prolonged heavy bleeding, or syncope, or if she experiences abdominal pain or discomfort, or general malaise (including weakness, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea) for more than 24 hours after taking misoprostol. Advise the patient to take the Medication Guide with her if she visits an emergency room or a healthcare provider who did not prescribe MIFEPREX, so that the provider knows that she is undergoing a medical abortion.
